Case Definitions
Clinical description
Many cases are asymptomatic. For those with symptoms, trichomonas vaginalis is characterised in women by vaginitis, vaginal discharge, vulval itching, dysuria, offensive odour, urethritis or cystitis. In men symptoms include urethral discharge and/or dysuria, urethral irritation and urinary frequency.
Laboratory criteria
Detection of T. vaginalis nucleic acid target in specimens from clinically appropriate sites using a validated method.
Or
Detection of the parasites in discharges or clinically appropriate specimens either by microscopic examination or by culture
